Airbus has completed the in-flight validation of its experimental on-board image processing system named Project Eagle.

The system is designed to perform automatic approaches and landing in challenging conditions and will be integrated on future Airbus vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicles.

The trial, performed on an Airbus H225, demonstrated the ability to target landing zones up to two miles away and automatically track it during the pilots approach. Also, the flight tested the architecture and main components of the system, including the gyrostabilised optronics package and the processing unit.

Project Eagle’s next test will pair it with Airbus’ automatic flight control system to fully automate the approach to a selected landing area.
