HI Uplift: ‘Twice is nice for FAA’s R66 parts extension’

FAA’s recent approval to double the service life on specific Robinson R66 helicopter components willl cut operating costs by 6%.
The FAA’s recent approval to double the service life on specific Robinson R66 helicopter components from 2,000 to 4,000 hours will find favour with the growing base of private and corporate clients, according to the manufacturer. The new permission is expected to cut operating costs by 6% and reduce hourly reserve for overhauls by 25%.
“This approval is primarily aimed at reducing operating costs and downtime for our customers all over the world,” David Smith, president and CEO, Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC) tells Helicopter Investor. “We have an increasingly large number of commercial customers in the R66 who really value these kinds of life extensions.”
The extended service life applies to 12 selected parts, including five components within the main rotor gearbox. This doubling of service life means fewer overhauls and reduced maintenance expenses for R66 operators. In addition to the retirement life extensions, the calendar life for the R66 main rotor and tail rotor blades increased from 12 years to 15 years. This approval is backed by a wealth of approved data and structural testing, according to the manufacturer.
‘A game changer’
“This is a game changer for R66 operators,” says Smith. “By reducing the frequency of maintenance intervals, we’re making the R66 even more cost-effective and reliable. This reinforces our commitment to providing our customers with the best possible ownership experience.”
Among its clients, the manufacturer numbers small-scale business owners, high net worth individual, and, increasing corporations. These are roughly split evenly in the fleet.
“Commercial customers value the life extension programme that doubled life limits,” Smith tells us. “There are also a large number of private operators who fly lower annual flight hours, and for these customers, the calendar extensions of the main and tail rotor blades are highly coveted.” The company reports increasing numbers of R66 customers operation in agriculture, tourism, law enforcement and the utility industry.
Frank Robinson
Founded in 1973 by aviation entrepreneur and engineer Frank Robinson, the Robinson Helicopter Company has been at the forefront of industry innovation, according to Smith. For example, the manufacturer has helped to deliver safety-enhancing technologies, including OEM-designed crash-resistant fuel cells, 4K cockpit video cameras, autopilot systems and night vision compatible [NVG]-compatible cockpits.
The R66 first flew on November 7th in 2007, winning FAA certification in 2020. The five-seat R66 Turbine and R66 Turbine Marine helicopters are equipped with a two-bladed rotor system, T-bar cyclic, hydraulically boosted controls that are designed to eliminate cyclic and collective feedback forces and streamlined instrument panels.
Powered by the Rolls-Royce RR300 Turbine engine, the land variant has a cruise speed of 110kts (204km/hr) at maximum gross weight. It has a maximum range with no reserve of about 350nm (650km).
Turbine Police Helicopter
The aircraft is also available as a parapublic configuration as the R66 Turbine Police Helicopter. This aircraft is able to remain on station for up to three hours and is equipped with the WESCAM MX-10, a small, multi-sensor imaging system in a single line replaceable unit configuration.
Also, don’t miss our profile of startup company Rotor Technologies, which in partnership with Robinson Helicopter Company, is retrofitting R44 helicopters to fly visual line of sight (VLOS) drone operations such as crop spraying.
Meanwhile, back with R44’s bigger sister, the R66, Smith summarises the benefits of the new FAA approval like this: “The R66 is the world’s most popular turbine helicopter model based on new deliveries and Robinson Helicopter has recently delivered its 1,400th unit. This announcement provides customers significantly better operating costs for their R66 aircraft through reduced frequency of part replacements.”
The current standard price of a Robinson R66 Turbine Helicopter is $1,137,000.
