Aviation history was made n August 28th 1975, when the Robinson R22 made its first  flight. Half a century later on 28th August 2025 its manufacturer Robinson celebrated the achievement.

The iconic two-seat light utility helicopter received FAA certification in 1979. Since 1973, the Robinson R22 has sold nearly 5,000 units. It was a simple design that allowed new aviators a better understanding of helicopter handling. The R22 is so effective at training that it’s often said, “If you can fly an R22, you can fly anything,” a testament to its value in preparing pilots for more complex aircraft and flying any mission.

Robinson Helicopters was founded by Frank D Robinson in 1973 and the R22 was designed as a safe, reliable, and affordable helicopter. Before the R22, helicopters were mostly confined to military use. Frank D Robinson passed away on the 12th November 2022, aged 92.

The R22 was the first real affordable helicopter and began the Robinson Helicopter’s entire product line, including the R44, R66, and all-new R88.

“The R22 was Frank Robinson’s dream to make rotary-wing flight accessible for the average person,” said David Smith, president and CEO of Robinson Helicopter Company. “50 years ago, the R22 didn’t just take its first flight; it created a legacy that has empowered generations of pilots and operators around the world, and we continue to honour its lasting impact and the role it plays in the global helicopter community.”
